The personality of the protected oil by the DOP Oil of Terra Alta is determined by its main variety, "Empeltre", local variety and traditionally grown in the area, appreciated for its high fat content and an excellent·quality of oils. The area of natural and exclusive broadcasting of this variety corresponds to the valley of the Ebro and the Balears Islands. The geographical area of the DOP Oil of Terra Alta corresponds precisely to the south of this valley. This variety is perfectly adapted to the soil and climate characteristics of the production area, since it has not introduced recently but it is the result of natural selection that has caused a rustic variety adapted to poor soils, and resistant to drought and cold. It is the main and traditional variety of the region of Terra Alta, even it is the only grown variety in some places. So important and unique is the variety of "Empeltre" olive tree in the region of Terra Alta that it is also known by the name of "Terra Alta" in nurseries.
The altitude, natural barriers that form the topography of the area and the winds create a special microclimate in the area, that directly affects to biological cycle of the olive tree and consequently also its fruit, the olive, and oil obtained from’ olive tree.
