The tour step by step
If you start the tour in Arnes, located in the main square we can admire a privileged panoramic view of Ports. The historic center of this town was declared an interest cultural property by the Generalitat of Catalunya and the Town Hall is one of the first Renaissance style.
To go to the Greenway we have to leave the town by road in front of the intersection of the road T-330 (Gandesa - Vall-de-roures) with the entrance to the town, following the signs posts during about 5 km until the boundaries of Catalounya with Aragó, next to river Algars, where there is an ideal small dam ideal to swim. From there, you can see the imposing concrete bridge to cross the river, and where you can practice adventure sports such as bungee jumping. Nearby, there is Arnes-Lledó station, starting point of the Terra Alta Greenway.
We set out on a path by the Greenway towards Horta de Sant Joan. Two kilometers only separate the village station. In the town you can visit the Els Ports Ecomuseum and the Picasso Center, being obligatory to visit the medieval city center with the church square , City Hall and the church of Sant Joan Baptista.
Opposite the station of Horta de Sant Joan, there is a path to the Convent of Sant Salvador and to the natural area called "Racó de les Olles", a place with great beauty and ideal place to swim in river Canaletes.
From Horta, the route begins to descend very smoothly. Several tunnels and aqueducts make this part of the route until the station of Bot, in the middle of the track and next to the town. The most significant building in Bot is the Renaissance church of Sant Blai in the middle of the town. You can also visit the Chapel of Sant Josep, from where you can see a fantastic view of Bot, ranges of Pàndols and Cavalls and the Greenway. Next to the chapel there is the recreational area of the Forat de la Donzella.
Following the tour, after Bot we arrive to the station of Prat de Comte. Prat de Comte, from 4 km of the Greenway, is a small town populated in the time of the Templars, where they are the church of Sant Bartomeu, the Portal (ancient gateway to town), the distillery·and the bakery.
From 1 km from the station of Prat de Comte, and beside the route, there is the Sanctuary of Fontcalda: landscape, thermal and religious whole, place to stop for those who cross the Greenway. Located in a valley, beside river Canaletes, it gets the name of the hot water spring at the foot of the sanctuary from 14th century. Through the path, you can follow the straits that the river has formed with the passage of time. Its clean and transparent water invite you to swim and enjoy this gift of nature.
The end of the Greenway of Terra Alta is in the station of Pinell de Brai, from 5 km to Fontcalda. The village of Pinell is 6km away the Greenway, where you can visit the modernist Cooperative Wine Cellar by Cèsar Martinell, a disciple of Gaudí. The cooperative is the supreme exponent of all cooperatives by this disciple of Gaudí. The modernist style is appreciated to four corners. It is essential to see the magnificent frieze of glazed ceramic located at cellar's façade, work by Xavier Nogués, where there are allegorical scenes·in the vineyard.
